Personal Insurance in This Changing Climate

I'm a native of the Chicago area (go Bears!) and moved to Eugene with my wife, Jessica, to pursue a career with State Farm in 2002. My favorite things about Eugene are the friends we've made here and the many opportunities to play outdoors. I have a beautiful daughter who is almost five years old, as well as an enthusiastic two-year-old son. My kids keep me laughing and in shape, and I enjoy hiking, reading, and hanging out with my family and friends.

In 2004 I became a State Farm Agent on Coburg Road here in Eugene. Growing my business is a hobby and a passion– challenging, exciting, and rewarding. I know I'm blessed to have a job that I love even in times of frustration. Since starting my agency we've doubled in size and I now employ five full time staff with varying specialties.

My team consists of two Service Specialists charged with providing world-class service to our existing clients. We also have Insurance Account Representatives who help clients with basic risk management needs like Auto, Fire, Life and Health Insurance as well as Banking products like car loans and mortgages. I hired a Business Insurance Specialist last year who focuses on small business owner needs. My own focus is on personal financial planning, including risk management tools like Life Insurance, as well as wealth-accumulation products like our State Farm Mutual Funds.

Never has technology been more prevalent in our business than today. When I started in 2004 I had an agency peer who had been in the business for 35 years. He still had microfiche of old records in his back room! Now we are very close to working in a paperless environment (sorry Michael Scott), using electronic applications and signatures on our contracts. We’ve released “Pocket Agent” applications for the iPhone and Droid with numerous capabilities including the ability to report claims and contact our 24-hour service in case of emergency. By the end of the year our phone apps will be able to scan driver’s licenses to help our clients add drivers and take virtual checks so clients can make a payment from anywhere in the world. Live reviews via the internet are more common than ever as our client base becomes more tech-friendly. Clients are able to review contracts and discuss planning with me while I view on my screen from home.

Prospective clients used to walk in because they saw our sign as they drove past on Coburg. While we still see some of that activity, it is now far more common for us to receive calls from our Google ads . Possibly the most powerful change in growing our business has come in the way consumers shop for insurance, through the internet.
